Transport and transfer to your chalet

Are you travelling soon to one of our chalets in Austria, France or Italy? Then it is useful to know in advance which travel option is best for you. You travel to the chalet independently, but we are of course happy to help with practical information about accessibility, parking and possible transfers.

Many Wens Chalets properties are easy to reach by car, train or plane. Which option is most convenient depends on your destination, the composition of your group and your personal preference. On this page, you can read what to take into account when planning your journey.

Travelling to your chalet

Our chalets are located in popular ski areas in the Alps. Some destinations are easy to reach by car, while others combine well with a flight or train journey. The location of the chalet in relation to the village centre, ski lift, train station or airport also varies by destination.

Seven weeks before departure, you will receive the travel documents with practical information for your specific chalet. This includes the address, arrival information, local contact details, parking options and any special notes for the final part of the journey to the chalet.

Travelling by train to your ski destination

The train can be a relaxed way to travel to the Alps. You avoid a long car journey, traffic jams and winter driving conditions, while you can relax, work or already enjoy the view along the way. Travelling by train is also often a more environmentally conscious choice than travelling by car or plane, as CO₂ emissions per person are generally lower. This is an easy way to contribute to a more sustainable ski holiday.

Various ski areas can be reached via international train connections and regional stations. From the nearest station, you usually continue by bus, taxi, shuttle or transfer. For some chalets, the station is relatively close, while for other destinations you should allow for a longer final leg.

Check carefully in advance which station is closest to your chalet, how you will travel onward from the station and whether buses, taxis or transfers are still available on your arrival day. Travelling with lots of luggage or ski equipment? Make sure to include this in your planning.

Travelling to the chalet by car

Many guests travel to their chalet by car. This gives flexibility on the way and makes it easy to bring luggage, skis or snowboards. Keep in mind, however, that driving in the Alps in winter requires extra preparation.

For a car journey to Austria, France or Italy, it is wise to check in advance whether winter tyres are mandatory or strongly recommended, whether snow chains may be required and whether you need a vignette, toll badge or environmental sticker. It is also useful to know in advance where you can park at the chalet and whether the final road to the chalet may be steep, narrow or affected by snow.

Especially during busy holiday periods, roads towards ski areas can be crowded. Set off well prepared and allow extra travel time for traffic, snowfall, roadworks or border crossings.

Parking at the chalet

Parking options vary by chalet. At some chalets, you can park directly at or near the accommodation. At other chalets, parking is available nearby, in a public car park or at a central location in the village.

Your travel documents will state what applies to your chalet. Please check this information carefully before departure, especially if you are travelling with several cars.

Travelling with a large group? It is sensible to agree in advance how many cars are needed and who will travel with whom. This helps avoid the need for unnecessary parking spaces.

Winter tyres, snow chains and vignettes

In the Alps, winter conditions can change quickly. Even when the main roads are clear, the final kilometres to the chalet may require extra attention due to snow, ice or steep roads.

Always check the current rules for the countries you will be travelling through. Austria, France, Italy, Switzerland and Germany may have different rules for winter tyres, snow chains, toll roads, environmental zones and vignettes. It is advisable to bring snow chains when travelling to a ski destination, even if you do not end up needing them.

Flying to the Alps

For some destinations, flying can be a comfortable option. Especially when travelling from the Netherlands, Belgium or the United Kingdom, a flight to an airport near your ski area can save a lot of travel time.

Which airport is most suitable depends on the location of your chalet, available flights, arrival time and onward transfer to the destination. Therefore, do not only look at the distance on the map, but especially at the total travel time from the airport to the chalet.

From the airport, you continue by rental car, train, taxi, shuttle bus or private transfer. For some destinations, local transfer companies or ski shuttles are available. If you are travelling with a group, a private transfer from the airport can sometimes be a practical solution.

Below you will find a practical overview of commonly used airports by destination. The best choice may vary by travel date, depending on flight connections, arrival times, transfer options and weather conditions.

Salzburg Airport

Salzburg is especially convenient for destinations on the eastern side of Tyrol and in the Salzburgerland region. This airport is often a logical choice for chalets in and around the Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn and the Salzburger Sportwelt.

Salzburg Airport is convenient for: Fieberbrunn, Hinterglemm, Saalbach and Wagrain.

For these destinations, Munich can sometimes also be an interesting alternative, especially when the flight connections or arrival times are more suitable.

Innsbruck Airport

Innsbruck is a very practical airport for many Austrian destinations in Tyrol. For part of the Italian Alps, Innsbruck can also be a good choice, depending on the exact destination and transfer options.

Innsbruck Airport is convenient for: Finkenberg, Fiss, Gerlos, Sankt Anton, Sankt Christoph, Serfaus, Sölden and Selva di Val Gardena.

For Sankt Anton and Sankt Christoph, Zurich, Friedrichshafen or Munich may also be interesting. For Selva di Val Gardena, airports in northern Italy may also be possible in addition to Innsbruck.

Geneva Airport

Geneva is a commonly used airport for the French Alps. Especially for destinations in the Portes du Soleil, Geneva is often a logical choice. Geneva can also be interesting for other French ski areas due to its wide range of international flights and transfer options.

Geneva Airport is convenient for: Châtel, Les Gets, Morzine, La Plagne and Les Menuires.

For La Plagne and Les Menuires, Chambéry, Lyon or Grenoble can sometimes also be good alternatives. Which airport is most convenient depends on flight times, transfer duration and the availability of transport to the destination.

Transfers from the airport or train station

Wens Chalets does not provide standard transport to the chalet. You therefore arrange the journey to your chalet yourself. Of course, we are happy to think along with you about the possibilities.

Depending on the destination, transfer companies, taxis, shuttles or local transport services are often available. If you are travelling with a group, a private transfer from the airport or train station can be a practical solution. You will then be taken directly to the chalet or to an agreed location nearby.

When planning a transfer, pay close attention to the arrival and departure times of your flight or train, the travel time to the chalet, the amount of luggage, skis and snowboards, and the number of people in your group. Always check whether winter sports luggage is included in the transfer.

When booking a transfer, provide clear arrival information and check in advance where you will be picked up and dropped off.

Arrival at the chalet

Most chalets are available from 16:00 on the day of arrival. This gives the team enough time to clean the chalet and prepare it for your stay.

Arriving earlier in the village? You can often explore the surroundings, have something to eat or drink, arrange your ski equipment or collect ski passes. It is not always possible to enter the chalet earlier.

In the travel documents, you will find the exact arrival information for your chalet. This includes where to go, how the welcome works and who to contact in case of questions or delays.

Do you expect to arrive later than planned? Please inform us in good time, so our chalet hosts or local contact person are aware.

Departure from the chalet

On the day of departure, we ask you to leave the chalet by 10:00 at the latest. After that, the chalet is cleaned and prepared for the next guests.

Plan your return journey with enough time. Take into account traffic on changeover days, winter conditions and any travel time to the airport or train station. Especially with early flights, it is wise to check in advance whether a transfer or overnight stay nearby is necessary.

Tips for a smooth journey

Good preparation makes your journey to the chalet much more pleasant. Therefore, check the practical information, travel documents and route well before departure.
